Hannibal Regional Medical Group is pleased to announce the addition of Vascular Surgeon, Dr. Zakhary to their team. Dr. Zahkary is board certified by the American Board of Surgery in vascular and general surgery. He is also board certified by the American Board of Endovascular Medicine. Dr. Zakhary has a doctorate (Ph.D.) in surgery from Cairo University and a Master’s of Science in Clinical Outcome Research from Saint Louis University. He completed a residency in general surgery followed by a fellowship in vascular surgery at Cleveland Clinic.
Vascular surgeons treat diseases and problems within the vascular system, the network of arteries and veins that carry blood throughout the body. Your primary care physician may refer you to a vascular surgeon if you have a health problem that involves your blood vessels. For example, pain in your legs may mean you have peripheral artery disease. Individuals that have been diagnosed with diabetes, heart disease, high blood pressure or obesity are at a greater risk of damaging their blood vessels and may benefit from seeing a vascular specialist for a screening.
“The scope of my practice primarily focuses on peripheral arterial occlusive disease, aortic aneurysms, and carotid artery disease. These diseases all affect your arteries by either causing blockages in your arteries or eventually rupturing,” says Dr. Zakhary.
Dr. Zakhary makes patient education a priority, “I believe patients need to be well informed about their treatment options. I also make it a priority to provide my patients and their families with an honest opinion about which treatment would work best.”
Dr. Zakhary is an assistant professor of surgery at Saint Louis University and currently the Chief of Vascular Surgery at John Cochran VA Medical Center and is looking forward to serving the Hannibal community as well. “I have worked in the great state of Missouri for the past 10 years,” shares Dr. Zakhary. “I love the countryside and have a passion for serving the community.”
