In January 2024, Beverly Croner of Monroe City had fallen asleep while watching TV. When she woke up and went to bed, she noticed a strange heaviness on one side of her body. Although she could still move, it was difficult for her to turn over. Concerned and home alone, Beverly called her neighbor for help. Recognizing the urgency, her neighbor quickly called 911, and Beverly was transported to a nearby hospital.
Upon arriving at the hospital, it was confirmed that Beverly had suffered a stroke. She spent the next two days in intensive care as her condition was closely monitored. With a long journey of healing and rehabilitation ahead, the next step was inpatient therapy. Wanting to be closer to home so her husband could visit more easily, Beverly chose to be transferred to the Inpatient Rehabilitation unit at Hannibal Regional Hospital.
When asked about her experience in Inpatient Rehabilitation at Hannibal Regional Hospital, Beverly shared, “I stayed in Inpatient Rehab for five weeks straight. I was surrounded by the nicest, most caring people. The nurses were great and made me feel like I wasn’t even in a hospital. I felt like I was at home among friends. Both the doctors and nurses gave the best bedside care, I can’t recommend them enough.”
During those five weeks, Beverly focused on regaining her balance, learning to walk with a walker, improving her speech, rebuilding coordination in her right hand, and relearning everyday tasks she would need to manage on her own once she returned home. Thanks to the dedicated care she received, Beverly was able to transition directly from Inpatient Rehabilitation to her home, a significant milestone that meant she could avoid spending time in a nursing home.
Back at home, Beverly continued working hard to rebuild her strength and coordination. She is still participating in physical and speech therapy and has made tremendous progress. As an avid gardener and lover of the outdoors, Beverly is now able to spend time in her garden again, a place that brings her joy, thanks to the support of her doctors, nurses, and therapists at Hannibal Regional Hospital.
“Don’t give up. You have to keep trying, keep pushing on. You just cannot give up,” says Beverley. “Every day is a challenge, but you have to keep going to get back to doing the things you love and enjoy.”
