A Journey Toward Better Health Starts at Hannibal Regional

Juggling work, earning his bachelor’s degree, and preparing for graduate school, Aaron Hays has a full plate, but his health has been weighing heavily on his heart and mind. After years of trying various diets, he knew something had to change. Confiding in his mom and close friends, Aaron reached a turning point and was encouraged to reach out to his primary care provider. He opened up to his doctor about the challenges he has faced with his weight and asked for help. That moment of vulnerability became the first step on a health journey that would change his life.

Aaron’s doctor referred him to Kristy Taylor, Registered Dietitian & Certified Diabetes Care and Education Specialist, at Hannibal Regional. In the first few meetings, Aaron and Kristy focused on the idea of change and began tracking what he ate. Kristy helped Aaron explore lifestyle changes he could make to improve both his health and relationship with food. Little by little, they focused on setting realistic goals, not just a number on the scale. Kristy’s supportive, goal-oriented approach helped Aaron make long-lasting lifestyle changes and truly thrive.

Aaron shares, “I never felt judged by Kristy. She helped me every step of the way. I learned to plan, what to eat and when, how to exercise, how to listen to my body, and how to build a healthy relationship with food. She was always there to help me succeed. She helped me implement small goals that made a big difference, goals I can continue to work toward and fit into my lifestyle. I want to be around for a long time, and that’s why I felt like I needed a change. Kristy helped me get to that point.”

With determination and consistent effort, Aaron has lost over 70 pounds since first meeting with Kristy in January of 2023. His quality of life has improved immensely. Aaron now has more energy and enjoys exercising. He has learned accountability and what he needs to do to listen to his body. Not only has Aaron improved his physical health, but his mental well-being has also strengthened through his health journey.

Today, Aaron is confident and thriving. He hopes that by sharing his story, others might be inspired to take that first step. Reflecting on his experience, Aaron says, “It doesn’t matter your age, weight, where you are in life, it only matters to make the first step forward to better health. It will change your life, mental health, overall well-being and your lifestyle. I want people to know that if a person is ready for change, it’s okay to ask for help. This is an environment that you are not judged in and have the opportunity to learn.”
