After one year of providing in-house inpatient dialysis services, Hannibal Regional Hospital is reflecting on the meaningful impact the program has had on patients and families across the region. Prior to having this service in-house, Hannibal Regional relied on a contracted third-party based out of Columbia, MO to provide dialysis services, which limited immediate access in urgent situations. The inpatient dialysis program has strengthened the hospital’s ability to deliver timely, life-sustaining care to patients experiencing acute kidney failure and other critical conditions.

Central to the program’s success was a significant organizational investment in advanced dialysis technology, including the purchase of TABLO dialysis machines, which offer exceptional versatility and adaptability to meet a wide range of patient needs. The TABLO machines allow the inpatient dialysis team to provide flexible, efficient treatment at the bedside, supporting critically ill patients in various care settings throughout the hospital. This advanced technology enhances both patient comfort and clinical efficiency, while allowing care teams to tailor treatment plans based on individual patient conditions.

Having a dedicated, in-house dialysis team on call has made a significant difference. In 2025 alone, the inpatient dialysis team completed 617 hemodialysis treatments, responding to urgent and complex patient needs across the hospital. Through timely intervention and coordinated care, six patients were able to recover renal function, highlighting the profound impact early and effective dialysis can have on patient outcomes. “Dialysis is sometimes required at a very critical point in a patient’s illness, and timely treatment can dramatically influence outcomes,” said Melissa Taylor, Inpatient Dialysis Coordinator. “Over the past year, having an inpatient dialysis team and advanced equipment like the TABLO machines here at Hannibal Regional has allowed us to respond faster, provide more coordinated care, and give patients the best possible opportunity for recovery during an incredibly vulnerable time.”
