After spending many years working as a hospital administrator in Springfield, Illinois, Robert Howland of Clarksville, Missouri, believed he understood healthcare well. His professional experience had shaped a long-held assumption that when facing complex or serious medical conditions, the best option was to travel to a large metropolitan hospital. That belief was put to the test when Robert found himself in need of a complex, life-saving surgery. He was under the care of a large hospital in St. Louis, Missouri, where the procedure had already been scheduled. Just days before the operation, however, the surgery was abruptly canceled. With no alternative treatment plan offered, Robert was told the devastating news that hospice care was his only remaining option.

Determined to explore every possibility, Robert’s hospice team reached out to their medical director, Hannibal Regional emergency physician Dr. Richard Thomas, to see if there was anything more that could be done. After carefully reviewing Robert’s case, Dr. Thomas believed another option might exist and referred him to Hannibal Regional general surgeon Dr. Eric Butler for further evaluation. Dr. Butler took a close look at Robert’s condition and determined that not only was the complex procedure possible, but it could be performed using robotic-assisted technology. This minimally invasive approach would allow for greater precision during surgery while helping reduce pain and speed recovery.

The surgery was successfully performed at Hannibal Regional, marking a remarkable turning point in Robert’s journey. Following the procedure, Robert was able to come off hospice care and begin healing. Robert admits he was initially hesitant about undergoing such a major procedure at a smaller regional hospital. That hesitation quickly faded after meeting Dr. Butler and the care team. “Dr. Butler was incredibly confident and compassionate,” Robert said. “He took the time to explain everything and made me feel comfortable about moving forward.”

In addition to the surgical expertise he received, Robert says the attentiveness and teamwork of the nurses and support staff made a lasting impression. “The level of care and attention I received was exceptional,” he said. “Everyone worked together to make sure I was comfortable and supported throughout my recovery.”

For Robert, the experience not only restored his health but also reshaped his perspective on where exceptional care can be found. “I spent many years believing you had to go to a big city for the best care,” Robert said. “What I experienced at Hannibal Regional completely changed that belief.” Today, Robert is grateful for the physicians and care teams who refused to give up on him and helped give him a second chance at life.
