For the last five years, John Griffin of Hannibal, MO has been a familiar face around Hannibal Regional, not as a patient, but as a volunteer. As a member of Hannibal Regional Auxiliary, he has volunteered much of his time in many different ways at the hospital, including being part of almost every single mass vaccination clinic held during the peak of the pandemic. Unfortunately, in August of 2021, John became very sick and ended up a patient at Hannibal Regional, fighting for his life. Dr. David Lemons and Dr. Santhosh Mannem, both Interventional Cardiologists at Hannibal Regional Medical Group, were instrumental in saving John’s life.

Cardiology Services at Hannibal Regional Worth the Ride

Kenny Masterson of Foley, Missouri is no stranger to heart problems. In fact, he’s had more than his share. Cardiac bypass surgery in 1998 had him laid up for almost three months recovering, and resulted in a few lifestyle changes, including no more fast food hamburgers, much to his chagrin. Over the years Kenny has had several episodes that landed him in the ER and put him in the care of several different cardiologists. The level of cardiac care he needed initially meant going to St. Louis providers, since they were closest to his residence in Foley, which is roughly 75 miles south of Hannibal.

Hannibal Resident Receives Local Life Saving Heart Care

Hannibal resident John Akright considers himself a healthy guy. He is only 61 years old, he and his wife Marcy go for walks every day, and both of them keep busy and stay active. He had no idea that he was just days away from needing open-heart surgery. John has no family history of cardiac-related issues, so it never occurred to him that he might be having a heart attack one day in early November 2023. As he sat eating his lunch that day, his throat started to swell shut and his teeth kept hurting. He thought he was having an allergic reaction to something in his food, nuts possibly. John’s wife was at work, and when he called her to tell her what was happening, she became immediately concerned, she told him to head straight to the Emergency Room at Hannibal Regional Hospital.
