The Kirksville community has long been without local access to radiation oncology, forcing patients to travel great distances for life-saving treatments. Dan, a 56-year-old business owner who employs many local residents, was diagnosed with prostate cancer and required radiation therapy. To keep his business running while undergoing treatment, he woke at 5:00 am each day, left by 5:30, and drove 180 miles for a 7:30 appointment—only to find that parking often took longer than the treatment itself. At the radiation center, Dan frequently saw dozens of others from Kirksville making the same exhausting journey.

Mary Jo faced breast cancer at 65, requiring 16 radiation treatments, five days a week, Monday through Friday. 8:00 am appointments meant early departures from Kirksville so she would still have time with her grandkids (24 then, 27 now). She counts herself fortunate she had her husband to drive her. The constant travel for each treatment added a significant burden to an already challenging time. The appointments themselves were a fraction of the time spent on the road.

At 51, Robert was diagnosed with prostrate cancer. As an assistant manager at the local Hy-Vee, husband, and father of three, he had to find a way to fit his radiation treatments into his schedule. With treatments taking place for 5 days a week, for 7 weeks, that was no small feat. Through the help of local friends, an understanding employer, a faith family, and others, Robert completed treatment before the holidays in 2024, and is on the road to recovery.
